Canada just became the 2nd country in the world to legalize marijuana

Canada is the second country in the world to legalize marijuana, paving the way for recreational sales throughout the country.

Canada's Upper House of Parliament on Tuesday evening approved the revised bill 52-29, making Canada the first G7 country to legalize marijuana. Uruguay did so in 2013.

Trudeau said on Wednesday that legalization will officially take effect on October 17, citing provincial requests for more time to develop retail infrastructure.

"It's been too easy for our kids to get marijuana — and for criminals to reap the profits," Trudeau said in a tweet on Tuesday evening. "Today, we change that. Our plan to legalize & regulate marijuana just passed the Senate."

What the bill does

Bill C-45, known as the Cannabis Act, legalizes marijuana but leaves it up to each province to decide how to sell it. Some provinces, like Ontario, are planning on provincially run outlets, while others, like Alberta, will open up marijuana retail to the private sector.

The federal government set a minimum age of 18 to purchase marijuana, though some provinces have indicated they will raise the age to 19, mirroring liquor-purchase laws. The bill makes the distribution and sale of marijuana to minors an offense.

The bill was part of a promise that Trudeau's Liberal Party made during the 2015 campaign to keep marijuana out of young people's hands and move the illicit market into a regulated framework.

"I'm feeling just great," Sen. Tony Dean, who sponsored the bill in Canada's Senate, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. "We've just witnessed a historic vote for Canada. The end of 90 years of prohibition. Transformative social policy, I think. A brave move on the part of the government."

"Canada should be applauded for taking bold and decisive steps towards ending the failed prohibition of marijuana," Hannah Hetzer, the senior international policy manager for the Drug Policy Alliance, said in a statement. "Canada's progress will galvanize support for drug policy reforms in the US and all around the world."

Erik Altieri, the executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, echoed Hetzer's sentiment.

"We applaud Canada for showing federal legislators in the United States what can be accomplished with true leadership and dedication to sound public policy," Altieri said in a statement.

The Canadian Marijuana Index, an aggregate measurement of all publicly listed marijuana stocks in Canada, was up 3.3% as of 10:45 a.m. The overall North American index, which includes US stocks, was up 2.3%.

Golden Leaf Holdings, a cannabis company listed on the Canadian Securities Exchange, was the biggest gainer, with the stock surging 6.8%.

Legalized marijuana is expected to be a boon for Canada's economy. The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, one of the country's largest banks, predicts that Canada's legal marijuana market will be a $6.5 billion industry by 2020.

Several Canadian marijuana firms, including Aurora Cannabis and Canopy Growth Corporation, are seeing a wave of investor excitement around marijuana legalization. Marijuana companies have been capitalizing on that liquidity to go on acquisition sprees.

Sir Alex Ferguson 'sitting up and talking' as Manchester United legend shows early signs of recovery after surgery on a brain haemorrhage

Sir Alex Ferguson is out of a coma and showing promising early signs of recovery following emergency surgery on a brain haemorrhage.

British football's most successful manager remains in intensive care but was sitting up talking to family and friends at Salford Royal Hospital on Monday, where he was admitted on Saturday.

Surgery went very well and the 76-year-old's response to treatment has given encouragement and cautious optimism to those close to him. However, they recognise it will still be a slow road to full recovery as he continues to be assessed.

News of Ferguson's condition has rocked the football world, which has rallied to support the United statesman who won an unprecedented 38 trophies during 26 years at Old Trafford before retiring in 2013.

United's club captain Michael Carrick opened up on Monday night over how the news left him particularly shocked.

'I was devastated,' the midfielder told MUTV. 'I got a text on Saturday evening and it didn't really sink in. I spoke to a few people at the club to get a rundown on how he was doing.

'The whole world showed their support and I was just concerned about him, as an ex-manager and a friend — as he was to everyone. It was the effect he had on everyone. He means a lot to me, as he does to this club.

'It was a tough night on Saturday and we were waiting for some positive news. We were all praying for him and thinking of him, Cathy and the family. It's a tough time for everyone but I'm thinking positive and hoping he will pull through.'

United have been inundated with goodwill messages for Ferguson from around the globe and Carrick added: 'It just shows you the mark of the man and the respect he had. The whole football world is incredible but outside of that as well, from all corners of the globe and different walks of life, people have shown their support. That's the effect he had on people.'

Ryan Giggs, the former United winger who is now the manager of Wales, echoed Carrick's sentiments. 'It was a huge shock as the news filtered in,' Giggs told BBC Wales. 'He has been the biggest influence in my career, both on and off the pitch.

'But I gather that the operation has been a success. I think the next couple of days are crucial. Now is the time to pray and hope he can make a full recovery. I know he is a fighter and that is what makes me think that he will be able to make a recovery.'

United defender Phil Jones, who was signed by Ferguson from Blackburn in 2011, said he was 'like a father' to him and was pivotal in helping him settle in.

'I am devastated,' Jones said. 'He is such a legend in my eyes. He is the one gave me that opportunity to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world. He's taken me under his wing like a father.

'It was shocking but I know his character. I know he has that fight in him. Hopefully he'll recover well. He has got all his family and friends around him, the support from all the players and staff at United and football around the world. We are all rooting for him. I'm sure he will be fine.'

Midfielder Juan Mata also dedicated his weekly blog to Ferguson. Although the Spaniard was signed after he had retired as manager, Mata spoke about his lasting impact at United.

He said: 'All of us were overwhelmed by the news about Sir Alex Ferguson's health condition. This circumstance has had a huge impact on United, as you can imagine. All of us are united right now, wishing Sir Alex a speedy recovery. He has been a unique and fundamental figure in the football world over the last few decades.

'I've never been coached by him, unfortunately, yet I know well his legacy on this club, that winning mentality and fighting gene that we must honour in the last three games of the season, especially in the FA Cup final. To achieve that, we are going to work hard while we eagerly await good news about Sir Alex's recovery.'

Codeine: Nigerian Pharmacists break silence on syrup ban

The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), has said the ban on importation of codeine as active pharmaceutical ingredient for cough preparations was not an outright solution to solving the problem of drug abuse in the country.

Dr. Albert Kelong Alkali, National Chairman of the ACPN, who called for a holistic approach in tackling problem of drug abuse, asserted that adopting a multisectorial approach involving the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and other drug control regulators would ensure drug tracking from the manufacturers to the end users.

He told newsmen on Thursday that: “We should be able to account for all the drugs that are manufactured and imported into this country.

“If we have such a tracking system in place, then the issue of drug abuse will be reduced to the barest minimum.

“So, the drug distribution system channel must be structured and the new National Drug Distribution Guideline (NDDG) should be implemented.

“We are still afraid that the deadline for the implementation of the new NDDG, January 2019 might not be met.

“They should be able to know that there is a drug that is being abused, investigate to find out where the abuse is coming from,” adding that with the current development, every relevant stakeholder would sit up.”

Tech Scientists accidentally discovered a mutant enzyme that could help the world eliminate plastic waste

Scientists have accidentally discovered a mutant enzyme that can fully eat up and decompose common plastic, and could help the world solve the problem of plastic waste.

Researchers in the US and UK examined an existing enzyme which had occurred naturally in landfill sites and was able to slowly digest man-made plastics.

But in the course of testing the enzyme's origins, the researchers made biological changes to it that turbo-charged its ability to digest plastics, according to Britain's University of Portsmouth.

According to The Guardian, the enzyme starts breaking down plastic in a matter of days, a process which would take centuries under normal conditions.

The enzyme is called PETase, because it eats polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the lightweight plastic used in bottled water and soft drinks.

Professor John McGeehan, one of the scientists leading the study, said:

"Serendipity often plays a significant role in fundamental scientific research and our discovery here is no exception.

"Although the improvement is modest, this unanticipated discovery suggests that there is room to further improve these enzymes, moving us closer to a recycling solution for the ever-growing mountain of discarded plastics."

The mutant enzyme is still in its early stages, and the scientists are now working on developing it for use on an industrial scale.

Right now, plastic bottles that are recycled can only be turned into opaque fibres, which can then be used to make clothes or carpets. A more effective method would enable recycled plastic to be put to a far wider variety of uses.

About 8.3 billion tonnes (9.1 billion tons/8,300 billion kg) of plastic has been produced since production began about 70 years ago. Around 6.3 billion tonnes (6.9 billion tons/6,300 billion kg) is waste, the BBC reported.

Stop Shaving Pubic Hair – Expert Warns!

An Abuja-based medical expert, Dr Arikawe Adeolu, has issued a warning to people who love shaving off their pubic hair.

Adeolu advised that it is safer to trim the hair rather than shaving it off completely as complete shaving can expose the skin to bacterial infection.

He added that the pubic hair served a major purpose of providing some level of cushioning for the individual, especially during sexual activity, preventing the skin from rubbing against another and causing abrasion.

“When you completely shave the pubic hair, it re-grows in a slanted fashion with the tip sometimes growing into the pubic skin, which can crack open the skin.

“It is usually a small crack which cannot be seen with the Unclad eyes but due to this crack and loss of integrity of the skin at that level, there is increased risk of getting infection.

“Complete shaving can also cause boil to develop in that region. This is because when you shave, you cause some level of abrasion in the area which opens up the skin.

He explained that if the skin around the pubic region was completely shaved and the individual’s skin came into contact with another person’s skin, friction would be increased due to the skin to skin contact.

He advised that individuals who were worried about the lack of hygiene due to untended pubic hair should consider trimming rather than complete shaving or waxing of the hair.

“These small openings cannot be seen with the eye but they are big enough for the micro organisms to get into the body.

“Also, because the pubic area is always moist, this serves as breeding ground for organisms like bacteria.”

Adeolu said that trimming the pubic hair would also help to reduce the risk of getting Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI), which could also be contacted when fluid from an infected partner’s Instruments came into contact with the pubic area.

According to him, if the partner is already infected, the virus in the semen or body fluid can easily penetrate the skin of the other to infect the individual.

He said that this infection was mostly caused by a virus known as ‘Molluscum contagiosum’, adding that there had been significant increase in incidences of such infection in hospitals.

“It is a viral infection that is also categorised as an STI. It affects the skin and does not need treatment; usually after a couple of weeks or months, the symptoms go away by themselves.

“You also have an increased risk of contracting other STIs such as HIV, Hepatitis, genital warts by complete shaving of the pubic hair,’’ Adeolu said.

New malaria drug makes human blood toxic to mosquitoes

There is a new ray of hope in the fight against Africa’s most endemic killer, Malaria, as a new research discovers a pill that can make human blood poisonous to mosquitoes and even kill the blood-sucking insect.

The new discovery by a group of scientists indicates that the disease-carrying mosquitoes die after feeding on the blood of humans given super-strength doses of Ivermectin.

Ivermectin belongs to a class of drugs known as antihelmintics. It works by paralyzing and killing parasites.

When injected with super doses of the drug, your blood will not just repel but also becomes poisonous to mosquitoes for up to a month, the research suggests.

A team of British-led researchers split 139 volunteers from Kenya (which reports more than six million new cases of malaria each year) into three groups.

The malaria patients were randomly chosen to be given 600mcg/kg or 300mg/kg of ivermectin for three days or were given a placebo.

The study, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, reveals that both doses of ivermectin are poisonous to mosquitoes for up to 28 days.

It also shows 97 per cent of mosquitoes died two weeks after feeding on the blood of patients given the higher dose of ivermectin.

The scientists drawn from the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KMRI) and the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (USCDCP) fed the mosquitoes in cages using blood samples taken from the volunteers.

“The most exciting result is the fact that even one month after the subjects took ivermectin, their blood was still killing mosquitoes,” lead researcher at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), Menno Smit told TechTimes.

The researchers believe that the 300mcg/kg dose offers the best hope due to adverse effect from higher doses.

This new finding could be a relief for Nigeria and Africa which contribute the highest global recorded cases of malaria.

It tends to work as a completely new type of anti-malarial drug that kills mosquitoes, as opposed to existing drugs that target the parasite.

Disease-carrying mosquitos kill more than 750,000 people a year, many of whom are children, global figures show.

According to the 2016 World Health Organisation (WHO) report, malaria killed 429,000 and infected 212 million people in 2015 with Sub-Saharan Africa accounting for 90 per cent of the cases and 92 per cent of the deaths.

It noted that children under five years of age were particularly vulnerable, as an estimated 70 per cent of them died of the disease.

Scientists found a ‘new organ,’ but it might not be what you’re expecting ~ By Claire Maldarelli

The human body is incredibly complicated, and it’s no surprise that we haven’t cracked every code that makes our fleshy forms run smoothly. Researchers are constantly finding new mechanisms by which our immune systems work, our cells function, and our muscles move. But far less often—if ever—do we hear that scientists have identified a new organ.

But in a report out last week in the journal Scientific Reports, doctors identified what they think could be a previously unrecognized organ.

The structure is a network of tissues which is found throughout the body, wrapping around the entire digestive tract, the lungs, and every artery and vein. The medical researchers dubbed the network the interstitium, and they argue should be deemed its own organ. Whether it will make the cut as a stand alone organ will depend on future research that further studies its composition and functionality. (Adding a new organ to the books takes far more research than one study.)

Regardless of its final status, though, the newly discovered structural formation may help doctors and other scientists better understand how diseases begin and spread.

What is it?

Unlike a more solid, contained organ like the heart or the liver, the interstitium is a network of tissue that surrounds nearly every organ system in the body. Just as our skin hugs us on the outside, this tissue layer wraps around organs inside our bodies.
Previously, researchers thought the interstitium was simply a layer of connective tissue. Connective tissue is absolutely not anything new. We’ve known about it—and how it functions—for a long time. Connective tissue typically has very few cells and instead is mostly constructed of various cartilage and other fibers that together form a strong structure that holds your organs in place or to connect one bone to another, or a muscle to a bone.
But there was something different about this particular connective tissue. When researchers looked more closely, they saw that between the spread-out cells was a series of fluid-filled sacs. A series of strong but flexible tissue filled with functioning proteins connected all these sacs together. This, the researchers deemed wasn’t the same as other connective tissue found throughout the body and thus could be its own entity, which they dubbed the interstitium.

How did we not know about it before?

We’ve known about it before, sort of. Researchers knew that this type of tissue existed but, again, they assumed it was just a network of connective tissue.
Still, modern medicine has all sorts of imaging tools that let us peep inside the human body. MRIs and CT scans let us see our organs, like our liver, gallbladder, and even our brains in great detail. We can even see inside and around the outside of some of our organs using techniques like cardiac angiograms that use dye and an x-ray machine to image our coronary arteries, as well as endoscopies and colonoscopies to see inside our intestinal tract.

So, how’d we miss it?

When we look at tissue samples under a microscope to diagnose diseases like cancer and others, pathologists prepare the slides by slicing them super thin and dying them various colors. This allows the pathologist to identify cell changes that may indicate various diseases. But in the process, it also removes all the fluid from the tissue sample. So, under a microscope, connective tissue and the distinct interstitium look identical.
When researchers took a closer look at this stuff without squishing it down, that’s when they identified the network of fluid-filled sacs that make it unique. The researchers were able to visualize this tissue without slicing it into super thin pieces by using something called confocal laser endomicroscopy; they use a low-powered laser and focus it on a specific area in the body, which is scanned both vertically and horizontally, creating a 3-D digital reconstruction of the body part.

What constitutes an organ, anyway?

We define an organ as something that is both self-contained and sufficient—and it performs a specific function. In this way, the researchers argue in the paper, the interstitium fits: Unlike regular ol’ connective tissue that kind of just sits there and connects and protects, the interstitium is a network of active proteins that work together.

What’s their specific function?

The researchers think that the interstitium acts as a sort of shock absorber. It compresses and distends (like the lungs and even the intestines), but this change in size, they think, might be working to keep tissues in the body from tearing as other organs and muscles in the body move about.

Is it officially an organ?

Nope. This is the first report to come out that suggests it should be defined as such. To make it so, many more groups of researchers will have to show and agree on the same thing, that it works alone as its own entity for a specific purpose. If that happens, it will likely take a few years, at least. Just last year, there was another similar structural substance found to surround the digestive tract known as the mesentery. As of yet, it’s still not an official organ.

What is the point of making it an organ?

Identifying it as such could help direct research towards it, and put its functionality in a new light. In this paper, the researchers also say that it could help us figure out some mechanisms in the human body that are still not fully understood. For example, because this fluid-filled network extends throughout the entire body and is connected to every organ, the network might be an unidentified route that cancer cells travel: Leaving their organ of origin and metastasizing, as its called, to other areas and organ systems in the body. If we can understand how this process works, we might be able to stop or prevent it. In fact, as the researchers note, cancer is often only likely to spread outside its organ and into the lymph nodes when it does somehow get into dense connective tissue—a pathway that has been inscrutable to cancer researchers.

Because the interstitium contains fluid, the researchers also want to know whether they influence fluid balance in the body and how it contributes to conditions like edema, or swelling, which is seen in some types of heart failure, kidney disease, and other infectious diseases.

Understanding better how this system works may enable us to find new ways to treat or prevent all these diseases that we hadn’t thought about before. And that’s true regardless of whether we give it the status of organ or not.

Blended frog drinks are mistakenly regarded as a treatment for disease

http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/wp-content/blogs.dir/471/files/2012/04/i-187730138347100f8de7268f54c2e7d8-this%20ain%27t%20like%20dustin%27%20crops%20boy.jpgPeru is one of the most bio-diverse nations on earth. Its weird and wonderful wildlife makes it a hotspot for the illegal trade in live animals - and the country's ecological police are struggling to cope.
Some readers may find parts of this story disturbing.
On a counter at the popular Mayorista market in Lima, stand two small, glass aquariums, containing dozens of toads and frogs. The frogs are from the Andes mountains, and some of the species are endangered. The stallholder works quickly, taking orders from a stream of customers who perch on stools or stand watching her work.
Making a "frog shake" takes a few minutes. First the stallholder grabs a frog from the tank. She cuts its neck with a knife and skins it as easily as if she is peeling a banana. Then she puts it into a pan on a small stove with some liquid. Next the bubbling concoction is poured into a liquidiser with the other ingredients - powdered maca, a medicinal Peruvian root, vitamins, fruit and honey. The stallholder stops the blender and tastes the thick green mixture, her face a picture of concentration. She spoons in more honey, gives it a final whizz and pours it into a tin jug.
A frog shake is poured
"It's very good for anaemia and for chest complaints," says a customer. It is also known as a kind of Andean Viagra. "It's good for that too," he agrees. "But for anyone who's ill, if you take it three or four times a week, you will feel better very quickly."
The amphibian "smoothie" originated among indigenous communities in the Andes, but its popularity has spread. Here, it costs five Peruvian soles - just under $2. "I sell maybe a 100 a day," the stallholder says. And she is well aware some of the frog species are under threat. "We all know that, but well… When they disappear, they disappear. But while we have them, we can help people with this drink."
A couple approach the stall with a small lidded, plastic box. They buy two frogs to take away. The woman explains she will make her own frog shake at home following an old family recipe, and use it to treat a lung complaint.
The stallholder has been fined several times for selling the frog drinks, but she has continued to trade - and customers continue to believe, without any scientific evidence, that the drinks benefit health.
