Defending Champions Germany knocked out of Russia 2018 World cup group stage

It was a night to forget as defending champions Germany crashed out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup after a surprise defeat to South Korea in their final Group F game on Wednesday.

Stoppage-time goals by Kim Young-gwon and Son Heung-min ensured Germany were sent out of the World Cup in utter disgrace.

The 2014 winners began their defence on a disappointing note when they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Mexico, but revived their dreams by coming from behind to snatch a 2-1 victory over Sweden in their second game.

They needed to take at least a point from the South Korea clash and hope that Mexico beat Sweden in the other group game, but results did not favour them as Sweden overcame Mexico 3-0.

The Germans failed to convert their many chances into goals, and the South Koreans inflicted them with two stoppage-time goals to ensure Germany finished at the bottom of the group.

Sweden, with 6 points – having earlier won against South Korea, emerged winners of the group, followed by Mexico also with 6 points but a lower goal difference.

Germany are leaving the World Cup in the group stage for the first time in 16 years.

It is the fourth time in 5 world cups where defending champions have been knocked out of the group stage.

In the round of 16, Sweden will battle the runners-up of Group E, while Mexico will take on the winners of the group.

The Group E final games will take place concurrently later on Wednesday, when Serbia take on Brazil,  and Switzerland battle Costa Rica.

Apostle Suleiman says Nigeria is running out of time; warns Buhari

General Overseer of the Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman has warned that Nigeria was running out of time owing to the senseless killing of defenseless citizens by violent herdsmen across Nigeria.

Apostle Suleman, who was reacting to the reported killing of 120 persons in Jos South, Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen, said the culprits were determined to start an avoidable problem that will be irreversible – a crisis between Christians and Muslims.

“It is now very clear that under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari, the herdsmen are pushing the country to the precipice and are desirous to start a war that will lead to the disintegration of Nigeria—a war between Christians and Muslims,” Apostle Suleiman said in a statement signed by his Communications Manager, Mr. Phrank Shaibu.

Suleman urged the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency put in place a programme that will disarm the killer herdsmen instead of using billions of tax payers’ money to establish ranches, which amount to creating safe havens for murderers.

“Why is the Federal Government establishing ranches for private citizens? Who is Buhari establishing ranches for? Ranches for men with assault rifles and inadvertently legalising murder?” Suleman queried.

He reiterated his warning that any attempt to massacre Christians in any part of Nigeria, will precipitate a crisis of epic proportion, the end of which no one can predict.

The statement, however, commended Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State whose quick intervention by way of declaration of dusk to dawn curfew averted what would have been a crisis of huge proportion.

It said the Muhammadu Buhari led All Progressive Congress (APC) led administration should forget re-election if the serious security problems currently confronting the nation are not addressed.

It called on security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators were caught and brought to justice, to prevent a reoccurrence.

Apostle Suleman prayed God to grant repose to the souls of the deceased and also grant members of their families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Mo Salah gets citizenship in Russia

Chechnya leader Ramzan Kadyrov has made Egypt’s talismanic striker Mohamed Salah an honorary citizen of the southern Russian region at a farewell banquet held for the eliminated World Cup 2018 side.

Chechnya has been hosting the Egyptian team’s World Cup training camp and Kremlin-backed Kadyrov has seized on opportunities to appear alongside Salah.

“Mohamed Salah is an honorary citizen of the Chechen Republic.

“Yes, that’s right! Tonight I signed a decree conferring this high award on the great footballer and member of the Egypt and Liverpool teams,” Kadyrov wrote on Telegram.

Reuters reports that Salah was presented with a badge and a copy of the decree at the dinner on Friday night.

Kadyrov took charge of Chechnya in 2007, backed by Kremlin to impose tight control in the Muslim region where Russia had fought two brutal and costly wars to crush separatists since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

In an interview with the BBC this week, he denied human rights abuses and laughingly rejected the idea he was using the presence of Salah for propaganda.

“We don’t use this kind of thing for politics. Our enemies are paid to write articles like that. I didn’t invite Mohamed Salah or the Egyptian team, they chose us themselves,” he said.

Canada just became the 2nd country in the world to legalize marijuana

Canada is the second country in the world to legalize marijuana, paving the way for recreational sales throughout the country.

Canada's Upper House of Parliament on Tuesday evening approved the revised bill 52-29, making Canada the first G7 country to legalize marijuana. Uruguay did so in 2013.

Trudeau said on Wednesday that legalization will officially take effect on October 17, citing provincial requests for more time to develop retail infrastructure.

"It's been too easy for our kids to get marijuana — and for criminals to reap the profits," Trudeau said in a tweet on Tuesday evening. "Today, we change that. Our plan to legalize & regulate marijuana just passed the Senate."

What the bill does

Bill C-45, known as the Cannabis Act, legalizes marijuana but leaves it up to each province to decide how to sell it. Some provinces, like Ontario, are planning on provincially run outlets, while others, like Alberta, will open up marijuana retail to the private sector.

The federal government set a minimum age of 18 to purchase marijuana, though some provinces have indicated they will raise the age to 19, mirroring liquor-purchase laws. The bill makes the distribution and sale of marijuana to minors an offense.

The bill was part of a promise that Trudeau's Liberal Party made during the 2015 campaign to keep marijuana out of young people's hands and move the illicit market into a regulated framework.

"I'm feeling just great," Sen. Tony Dean, who sponsored the bill in Canada's Senate, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. "We've just witnessed a historic vote for Canada. The end of 90 years of prohibition. Transformative social policy, I think. A brave move on the part of the government."

"Canada should be applauded for taking bold and decisive steps towards ending the failed prohibition of marijuana," Hannah Hetzer, the senior international policy manager for the Drug Policy Alliance, said in a statement. "Canada's progress will galvanize support for drug policy reforms in the US and all around the world."

Erik Altieri, the executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, echoed Hetzer's sentiment.

"We applaud Canada for showing federal legislators in the United States what can be accomplished with true leadership and dedication to sound public policy," Altieri said in a statement.

The Canadian Marijuana Index, an aggregate measurement of all publicly listed marijuana stocks in Canada, was up 3.3% as of 10:45 a.m. The overall North American index, which includes US stocks, was up 2.3%.

Golden Leaf Holdings, a cannabis company listed on the Canadian Securities Exchange, was the biggest gainer, with the stock surging 6.8%.

Legalized marijuana is expected to be a boon for Canada's economy. The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, one of the country's largest banks, predicts that Canada's legal marijuana market will be a $6.5 billion industry by 2020.

Several Canadian marijuana firms, including Aurora Cannabis and Canopy Growth Corporation, are seeing a wave of investor excitement around marijuana legalization. Marijuana companies have been capitalizing on that liquidity to go on acquisition sprees.

HISTORY TO BE MADE AS BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY GEARS UP FOR FIRST GAY ROYAL WEDDING THIS SUMMER

Another member of the British Royal family is about to have a historic royal wedding.

Meghan Markle was the first mixed-race woman to marry into the royal family. The next member of the Royal family to get married will be the very first gay royal family member to get married.

55-year-old Lord Ivar Mountbatten (Queen Elizabeth’s cousin), came out in 2016 and announced that he was in a relationship with James Coyle, an airline cabin services director. Previously, he was married to a woman named Penelope Anne Vere Thompson and they share three daughters.

Lord Mountbatten will marry his partner this summer and his ex-wife will be walking him down the aisle.

"It was the girls’ idea,"  Penelope Anne Vere Thompson said of the new wedding details. "It makes me feel quite emotional. I’m really very touched."

Lord Mountbatten says he’s doing the wedding for his partner:

For me, what’s interesting is I don’t need to get married because I’ve been there, done that and have my wonderful children; but I’m pushing it because I think it’s important for him. James hasn’t had the stable life I have. I want to be able to give you that.

As for the plans for the big day, James revealed that the ceremony, taking place in the private chapel on Lord Mountbatten’s estate in Devon, will be small and intimate, with just close friends and family in attendance followed by a bigger reception of 120 guests.
