Unai Emery reveals his most important summer signing

Arsene Wenger's successor has wasted little time strengthening the squad he inherited from the long-serving Frenchman, recruiting five new players, while admitting he may not be dine with the transfer market, should another opportunity arise.

Unai Emery believes Lucas Torreira could turn out to be Arsenal’s most important signing of the transfer window.

Emery has strengthened Arsenal’s defence with the additions of experienced duo Stephan Lichsteiner and Sokratis Papastathopoulos and recruited a new goalkeeper in Brend Leno to challenge Petr Cech for the No.1 spot.

Arsenal confirmed the arrival of Matteo Guendouzi, 19, on Wednesday but he is likely to be one for the future despite Emery’s insistence the former Lorient midfielder is ready to fight for a first team place.

Torreira, however, Arsenal’s most expensive signing of the summer at £26million from Sampdoria, is likely to play a key role in the defensive midfield position which has been the Gunners’ Achilles’ heel in recent years.

‘He is a very young player but his career is interesting in Italy and in the World Cup he improved very quickly,’ Emery told Arsenal.com

‘I think for us, this midfielder is very important and he is coming with ambition to get better here and to improve with us.’
